About Social Enterprise Magic Bus
seMagicBus is a transformative international learning experience in real-life social entrepreneurship. Our unique program turns the field into a classroom, delivering lectures “on the bus” in between field-based research and exercises. seMagicBus courses are designed and developed to meet the specific learning needs of its participants: students and practitioners.
seMagicBus’ learning-by-doing approach emphasizes personal growth, leadership development, and skills acquisition. seMagicBus inspires social entrepreneurship at home by imbuing participants with knowledge, tools, networks, and practical experience. To this end, seMagicBus is a one-of-a-kind experiential learning program that yields real results.
seMagicBus is operated by Virtue Ventures LLC, and leverages the firm’s long history and deep experience as a leading social enterprise technical assistance organization. seMagicBus benefits from Virtue Ventures’ long standing relationships with social entrepreneurs, funders, support intermediaries, in-country networks and highly qualified international faculty.
History
seMagicBus was conceived by Kim Alter while teaching social entrepreneurship courses at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
Drawing on years of experience as a social entrepreneur and social enterprise management consultant, Alter brought practice into the classroom to help her students realize their goals of becoming social entrepreneurs.
Combining attributes of Alter’s practical and academic background, seMagicBus was designed as a dynamic, experiential, reality-based approach to teaching social entrepreneurship created for students and practitioners.
The name Magic Bus is inspired by the enigmatic educational icon, The Magic School Bus, a vehicle for creative, experiential education—and the counter cultural pioneers of the 1960s and travelers on The Magic Bus ‘Further’, who rejected convention and represented new ideals of social justice, environmental protection, and civic engagement.
